BHIMSEN JOSHI .. Jogi mat ja mat ja ...मत जा मत जा मत जा जोगी... Madhubala, Dilip Kumar

मत जा मत जा मत जा जोगी
“Jogi mat jaa” is a very popular Meerabai bhajan, made famous during yester-years by Juthika Roy and M S Subbulakshmi and later on by Geeta Roy, Lata Mangeshkar and many other singers. Even in Classical field it was made immortal by Pandit Omkarnathji Thakur.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Indian vocalist, born Feb. 4, 1922; ‎Ron Taluka, Gadag , in Karnataka state, died Jan. 24, 2011, Pune, Maharashtra state. He was one of India’s most admired singers of traditional Hindustani ragas (melodic frameworks for vocal improvisation), most notably of the khayal (a two-part poetic song) and the bhajan (a Hindi devotional hymn, or chant). His finely nuanced improvisations, passionate onstage physicality, and soaring vocal dexterity, especially in the khayals’ faster passages, won him fans from all castes and all parts of the country. Joshi learned bhajans from his mother, who died when he was still a child. Despite his father’s initial objections, he studied classical Hindustani music and then moved to Bombay (now Mumbai), where he got a job singing on All India Radio. In addition to concerts and numerous recordings, Joshi provided vocals for several movies. In 2008 he was awarded the Bharat Ratna (India’s highest civilian honour).

Mat ja, mat ja, mat ja jogi, paaon padu main torey
Do not go my love (Jogi); I beg you not to abandon me
Prem bhagtee ko panth hee nyaro, ham ko gyan bata ja
The path of devotional love is very strange; teach me the wisdom to understand it
Agar Chandan ki mai chita rachau, apne hath jala ja
I will erect funeral pyre of Agar and Sandalwood; you set it on fire by yourself
Mat ja, mat ja, mat ja jogI

Jal jal bhayi bhasm kI dhei, apne ang laga ja jogi
Once after burning, I turn into a pile of ash, you smear it onto your body
Mat ja, mat ja, mat ja jogi
