Surdas describes Lord Krishna as a child and tells us how Yashoda is rocking his cradle to put him to sleep. She adores Krishna by gently rocking his cradle, humming a tune & kissing him time and again. But, despite making various attempts to put Krishna to sleep she’s unable to do the same. Therefore, mother Yashoda addresses the slumber and instructs it to come and engulf her son in it. In spite, of the unending attempts made by the mother the Lord remains awake and pretends to fall asleep by closing his eyes and making a calm face that would make Yashoda believe so. Soon, after the gopis come to visit them & seeing them come Yashoda asks them to be quiet as they would make Krishna awake. But, as promptly as the Lord realises that the gopis have come to visit he instantly wakes up & once again Yashoda in order to put Krishna to sleep starts singing melodious lullaby in her gentle voice. To this entire situation the poet Surdas appreciates and credits Nanda’s wife Yashoda that she has the pleasure to see this site of the Lord that even the Gods and sages rarely witness.
