How to Plant Flowering Bulbs For Spring and Summer
Watch the video from YouTubeThe great thing about perennial flower bulbs are that they produce flowers year after year. The necessary tools and products for this project include: compost or peat moss, fertilizer, a trowel and garden bulbs. Spring is best time to plant tender bulbs like irises, gladiolus and elephant ears for a great display during the summer. In the fall plant hearty bulbs like tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses that will bloom the following spring. Blooms last about 3-4 weeks once they bloom. However flowers like elephant ears that are planted for foliage will last all season long. Plan. Prepare. Plant. First plan a design. Whether it be a formal display along pathways or scatter throughout landscape for a more natural look. Think about what colors work the best as well. Next prepare the soil. Make sure it is well drained and loose. Add compost or peat moss to get the right consistency. Also add fertilizer that's recommended for bulbs. Finally plant the bulbs the proper depth. The general rule of thumb is to plant 2-3 times as deep as the length of the bulb. Plant nose side up and cover with dirt and about 2"" of mulch in the fall. Water, and you are done. For colder climates, you may want to dig up and store the bulbs over the winter.
