Instead of soothing, it's much more likely to heighten his energy, step up his blood pressure, and further his tantrum or whatever it was that bothered him in the first place. This is stirring music, violent music at its most moving, played by the Regimental Band and Pipes and Drums of THE BLACK WATCH. How much tunes like these helped members of the Black Watch in their campaigns all over the globe has never been historically established, but certainly the regiment is among the world's most famous military units. Organized in Scotland in the early eighteenth century to police, or "watch," the scottish highlands still seething against the English after the 1715 rebellion, the new regiment adopted a dark tartan to contrast with the bright scarlet of the English units, and thats how it got the name of the Black Watch. Since then it has played a vital part in all of Britan's struggles. After a short hitch on Scottish patrol duty, the regiment was blooded in the battle of Fontenoy against the French in 1745. Then came service in Ireland, and the Black Watch became the 42nd regiment of infantry. Next it sailed across the Atlantic to reinforce the British and American colonial troops opposing the French in the French and Indian War. Its gallantry at Ticonderoga won for the Black Watch the right to use the word :Royal" in its title. Black Watch units later served in the West Indies, India, Egypt and the Battle of Alexandria, during which a Black Watch officer captured the standard of Napolean's "Invincble Legion," practically destroyed by the Highlanders in this engagement. Then came Waterloo, Crimea, the Boer War and the First World War. And in World War II the regiment was represented in every major theatre of war except Norway and Malaya. On These two sides, you'll hear all the music of the Black Watch represented: its parade and marching songs, the battle cries of the bagpipes, and the ceremonial numbers reserved for special occasions when the regiment lines up with arms and instruments brightly burnished to receive the honors and awards of Queen and Commonweath. Richard Joesph Travel Editor, Esquire, and host on the weekly television show, "Passport" Radio Corporation of America, 1957
